Picasso

Sculptor of matter and body

PMmedia Adv.
In the eyes of the world, his paintings stood out and his sculptures took a back seat to a packed, prolific artistic life and career. But Picasso surpassed himself, and continues to do so 50 years after his death. Now the time has come for him to reveal himself as a sculptor. Or rather, for us to recognise him as a sculptor as well as a painter. A complete artist. Although many already knew this. For a long time now. After all, the first exhibition in which his sculptures were shown was Hommage à Pablo Picasso, at the Grand Palais and Petit Palais in Paris in 1966. The following year, the Tate Gallery in London organised another exhibition mainly devoted to his sculptures. Up until then, his three-dimensional work had received very little attention. However, sculpture was not a secondary interest for Picasso, rather a form of expression on an equal footing with painting.

Picasso surpassed himself, and continues to do so 50 years after his death
Picasso Sculptor. Matter and Body is the first major exhibition in Spain dedicated to this facet of the great Cubist. The selection of pieces aims to underline the central role played by the representation of the human body, taken as a whole and as a fragment, in the work of the artist who was born in Malaga. And that is precisely where the works can be visited, until September 10.
Like the rest of his artistic production, Picasso’s sculptures are remarkable for their innovation and the use of unorthodox techniques and materials. Between modelling and construction, in welded iron, wood or sheet metal, incorporating the void as a new element that was crucial to modern sculpture.
This exhibition is part of the Picasso Celebration 1973-2023, an international programme organised with the support of the Musée National Picasso-Paris and the Spanish National Commission for the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Pablo Picasso’s death. Telefónica is a corporate collaborator of the Spanish events and the fair is sponsored by Fundación Unicaja.
