«It’s not an easy task to make a brand succeed in a complex market»

Long flights no longer need to be uncomfortable or stressful experiences. The long queues at security control become shorter with New Rayde. Luggage becomes easy to transport. A car is no longer a problem, as transport to the airport is guaranteed. In short, things are looking all set for a smooth flight, an idea put into practice by young entrepreneur Pedro Santos 12 years ago. The company can attend to all aircraft visiting Angola with its safe ground handling services. But that’s not all. Lisbon is already an operating market and there are partnerships and future projects on the horizon, according to the CEO. What follows is a pragmatic conversation, which would be difficult for others to achieve, as Pedro maintains the low profile that is so characteristic of him.

New Rayde was founded in Angola in 2011. Was the project created as a result of a market need?
New Rayde is a company that has been certified by the Angolan National Civil Aviation Authority and its core business is ground handling, especially that of small and medium-sized aircraft. It began providing passenger services just before the outbreak of the pandemic. To answer the question, this project came about from a personal need. I constantly found myself in embarrassing situations because of all the extra kilograms in the suitcases that I was bringing from Lisbon to Luanda. The whole process of organising, weighing, packing and shipping is an ordeal, especially when travelling as a family. That’s when I started thinking about a solution for these kinds of situations, in order to serve as a cost-effective form of support.

What are the company’s values and mission?
The values are the people who have worked with me for over 10 years and who make the process of passing on values and principles natural. Our commitment, dedication, humility and friendliness make all the difference. We’re not perfect, but we work every day to improve. New Rayde’s mission is to provide a serious, quality service. It gives us great satisfaction to hear «I could no longer travel any other way».

Were there any initial challenges in the process of getting the brand up and running?
There are still a number of challenges, and these are daily ones. It’s not an easy task to make a brand succeed in a complex market such as ours. We face many situations imposed on the market, which make it difficult for the company to operate and evolve, hence the resilience that characterises the people of this country. The payoff lies in the act of persisting, accepting and correcting the mistakes and then improving.

What types of meet & greet services does the company provide?
We offer three types of meet & greet: EXTRA VIP, VIP and NORMAL. The EXTRA VIP arrivals service starts at the apron and ends on the external side of the airport; the VIP service starts in the emigration area and ends on the external side, and the NORMAL service starts from the post-emigration area up to the external side. The same service is provided for boarding. New Rayde offers a baggage and passenger collection service that eases the burden of travelling to destinations with a flight time of more than six hours.

«It’s not an easy task to make a brand succeed in a complex market»
Is the opening of the new Agostinho Neto International Airport in Luanda a great growth opportunity for New Rayde?
Absolutely, because it could be a great opportunity to showcase our services. Although the new airport is modern and therefore facilitates passenger mobility, the meet and greet service is fundamental for corporate travellers or those looking for a distinctive service. The airport’s distance from the city centre will be a selling point. I think it’s an added value for the passenger to have a baggage and passenger collection service associated with meet & greet and accompaniment.

Though it operates nationwide, the brand also covers foreign markets. Tell us about your commitment to internationalisation.
We’ve already had New Rayde operating in Lisbon since 2018 and will soon be operating in Maputo, as soon as we finalise the certification process with the Mozambican Civil Aviation Institute (IACM). We will always choose to be 100% present in markets where we can represent the brand. In those markets where we think a partnership might work better, we will do that. We have partnerships in the pipeline, but the details will only be revealed when the time is right.

What makes you a successful manager?
Being a human being, knowing how to listen and being available. I’ve always wanted the whole team to have direct access to the company’s management – in fact, we have a very low pyramid in our company. I also opt for smooth communication in order to shorten the time it takes to resolve any problems.

Are discretion and keeping a low profile also characteristics of your personal life?
I’m a very homely person and I greatly value my family’s privacy. Having a wife and children I’m proud of fulfils my being. I see myself as the mirror image of New Rayde, which doesn’t do a lot of advertising, but excels in its essence.
